Whisky Barrel Toppers

These great folks over at Cutwater Spirits contacted us to make some tops for these enormous whisky mash barrels while not in use. The barrels are located in one of their stylish tasting rooms and are seen by clients during tours, so logos were requested. The trick was when we discovered that each hand made oak barrel was not uniform we had to find a way to keep all that fabric from drooping into the barrel. Our solution was large custom sand bags that when hanging from line attached stretches it as well as adjusted for the differences.. This was not only a functional solution but complimented the style of the tasting room. The applique signage adds more contrast and texture than a printed sign and has very slight imperfections that keep with the organic hand made look. All together a fun set of covers for us to make. Replacing an old Dodger

Here is a dodger I made 11 years ago. It has held up better than I hoped. The dodger could go a couple more years before it is unusable. This one was made with Toast Sunbrella fabric and as Strataglass windows. The boat owner Pat is very good at keeping his boat nice and washes the canvas only with ivory soap and the occasional spot of bleach. The windows were kept up with Imar Strataglass polish/cleaner. Look for the new one in the portfolio section of the site soon.

Helping our community

Thanks to Tresha Souza founder of So Others May Eat our local homeless will not have to go hungry. Tresha contacted us about making a cover for their new mobile grill donated to SOME by the Kiwanis club of La Jolla. She and a group of volunteers have been setting up the kitchen for the hungry twice a week for the past nine years. Our neighborhood has quite a few homeless people and can say first hand that they are misunderstood. I have noticed that the majority of the people I have spoken to or observed are quite kind, respectful and generous. I was happy to help out in a small way by making a cover for the mobile kitchen with the help of Keyston Brothers who donated the fabric.

The day I went to measure for the cover they had set up at Mission Bay. Soon after she pulled up in the van towing the grill, people started pouring in from all directions to help set up for today’s meal which was lasagna. Everyone seemed to know the routine and worked diligently to get everything in order before people started lining up.

Part of her success is that Tresha expects the visitors to participate in the effort. She helps them by providing the food but even more by encouraging them to help themselves. “They will help if given the opportunity” she explained. One of the people who showed up while I was there to measure for the cover was Wayne who was early to set up the pantry. “He came for four months but stayed for eight years,” Tresha said “he has been here every week since.”

I asked why Tresha started SOME and she said “I love god.” and “that God blessed me so I have to give back.” Aside from the kitchen, Tresha is working on converting a used ambulance into a mobile hair salon. She also shared with me that people who line up for food on a random day at the end of the year will be asked what they want for Christmas. Like Santa Clause himself, she finds people to donate the things on the list then will surprise people on Christmas with the present they wished for.

Charcoal Grey Sunbrella Outdoor Bar Cover

Big Bar Cover!

We got to make this charcoal grey bar cover for Carnitas’ Snack Shack on the Embarcadero. The contractor sent us CAD files ahead of time and coordinated with us so that the cover could be done as soon as the bar was completed. Restaurant covers have to be as easy as possible for the employees to put on and take off. The covers main functions were to protect the bar area from dirt as well as keep people out of the bar area while it was put away for the night. We also incorporated large mesh vents in the middle so any mop water underneath can evaporate. A heavy duty cable was built into the lower hem so that it could be secured at night.

Custom BBQ Cover

This beautiful house was just finished being remodeled and covers were needed to protect the new bar and grill. The Sunbrella cover had to be easy to install and remove and it was important to make it look really nice while on. Our custom bar covers look so good you can leave them on when company comes over. Lots of wind blows through so we added extra sand bags, each in their own mesh pocket.
